This summer, five lucky students from Wabash High School embarked on an unforgettable journey to Gunma Prefecture, Japan, thanks to a generous sponsorship from the Gunma government. This once-in-a-lifetime experience allowed them to dive headfirst into Japanese culture, forging friendships and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
The students had the unique honor of meeting the governor of Gunma, a testament to the importance of cultural exchange and the strong bond between our communities. Their itinerary was packed with enriching experiences, from exploring the historic hot springs of Kusatsu Onsen and Ikaho Onsen to painting their own daruma dolls, a traditional symbol of good luck, under the guidance of a fourth-generation master craftsman.
In Tokyo, they delved into the eclectic world of anime, manga, and electronics in Akihabara, followed by a taste of trendy fashion and street food in Harajuku.
The students also engaged in a meaningful cultural exchange with Japanese students their own age at a local public high school. They tried their hand at calligraphy, a beautiful art form that requires patience and precision, and enjoyed fun games with students from Gunma Women's University. Throughout the trip, they savored a variety of delicious Japanese cuisine, further immersing themselves in the local culture.
This incredible journey not only broadened their horizons but also fostered a deep appreciation for Japanese traditions and customs. The Wabash High School students returned home with a newfound understanding of the world and a collection of cherished memories that will undoubtedly stay with them for years to come.

In November 2022, nine Wabash High School students embarked on a life-changing journey to Japan through the Kakehashi Project, a cultural exchange program sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This immersive experience aimed to foster deeper understanding and connections between our students and Japan.
The adventure began in Tochigi Prefecture, where the students savored the local specialty, Utsunomiya gyoza (dumplings). Their enthusiasm for Japanese culture even landed them a spot on local television, where they shared their experiences and impressions.
In Tokyo, the group visited Zojoji Temple, a historic landmark, and ascended the iconic Tokyo Sky Tree, marveling at the panoramic views of the city.
The heart of the Kakehashi Project lies in cultural exchange, and our students had the incredible opportunity to visit Hoshinomori Middle and High School. There, they presented about life in Wabash and participated in activities that bridged the gap between their two cultures.
To truly experience everyday life in Japan, the students also had a memorable one-day homestay with local families. This allowed them to immerse themselves in Japanese customs, traditions, and the warmth of Japanese hospitality.
